Immigrants Caucus
Mission Statement:
To build political power and representation for Caribbean, immigrant, and refugee communities
in Monroe County by increasing their presence in elected and appointed offices, amplifying their
voices in public discourse, and empowering current and future generations to engage fully in the
political process.
Vision Statement:
A Monroe County where immigrants, refugees, and Caribbean communities are fully represented
at every level of government and are actively engaged in shaping equitable, inclusive, and
culturally competent public policy.
Core Goals
1. Representation: Increase the number of elected and appointed officials who identify as Caribbean,
immigrant, refugee, or are descendants of these communities.
2. Engagement: Encourage political awareness and participation through voter education, community
forums, and civic leadership development.
3. Empowerment: Develop leadership pipelines for youth and emerging leaders from immigrant and
Caribbean backgrounds.
4. Advocacy: Serve as a unified voice to advocate for policies that impact immigrant, refugee, and
Caribbean communities in Monroe County.
5. Visibility: Celebrate and uplift the cultural identity and contributions of these communities through
strategic partnerships and public campaigns.
Key Priorities (One–Three Year Roadmap)
1. Leadership Development
- Launch an annual leadership fellowship for first and second-generation
immigrants and Caribbeans interested in public service. - Host workshops on how to run for office, serve on boards, and navigate political
systems.
2. Political Education & Voter Engagement
- Host multilingual voter registration drives and candidate forums.
- Educate community members on ballot measures, local government structure, and
civic rights.
3. Strategic Alliances & Coalition Building
- Partner with existing civic, nonprofit, and political organizations to amplify
shared goals. - Serve as a liaison between underrepresented communities and local decision-makers-
makers.
4. Policy Advocacy
- Identify and champion issues affecting immigrant and Caribbean communities
(e.g., housing, education, language access, immigration reform). - Develop policy briefs and organize advocacy days.
5. Visibility & Narrative Shift
- Use storytelling campaigns and media outreach to reshape public narratives about
immigrants and Caribbeans. - Celebrate cultural heritage months and amplify local leaders.
